Avoid hair products on your hair that are harsh and contain chemicals that will aggravate the scalp and can lead to broken or brittle hair resulting in hair loss.

Thinning of your hair is something that does not occur overnight, but usually takes place over a period of years. This is a general rule but is not always the case. Some people may lose their hair within a very short period, but this is mostly the exception and not the rule. See different types of alopecia.

The products that we use on our hair, can contribute to hair thinning, and so care should be taken over the choice of products and treatments that we use.

Treatments that we apply to our hair, should not contain any harsh chemicals. These harsh chemicals damage the hair strands and cause brittleness and breaking of the hair. Bleaches and many hair colourants will damage your hair and should be avoided.

Hair treatments that leave a oily residue on the scalp, often tend to block the pores of the hair follicles, which can also cause damage. When using any of these type of treatments, do not leave the treatment on your hair too long and make sure that you wash your hair and scalp thoroughly afterwards with a mild shampoo to remove all remaining residues.

Always use a mild shampoo and rinse your hair well with clean water after washing. Do not wash your hair too often, but rather rinse your hair with clean water on a regular basis, which will result in the need for you to wash your hair, less frequently.

When possible, soak a couple a sprigs of fresh rosemary in warm water. Use this rosemary water to rinse your hair. It will provide extra shine to your hair, whilst also increasing blood circulation to the scalp. Lack of sufficient blood circulation to the scalp results in decreased nutrition to the hair and subsequent hair thinning.

When your hair starts to thin or when it starts to fall out and balding sets in, it is important to look at the pattern in which your hair loss has started to occur. There are a variety of different types of hair loss, all of which have differing causes and differing treatments. Should you be experiencing unnatural hair loss or thinning of the hair, it is advisable to seek medical advice.

The most common type of hair loss experienced, is called androgenic alopecia. This is also called pattern baldness and as this is most frequently experienced by men, we mostly hear of male pattern baldness. This condition can also be experienced by women and lately more and more women are becoming prone to hair thinning. In women it is referred to as female pattern baldness.

Pattern baldness is often attributed to generic causes and so many do not realise that it is treatable and that the lost hair can be regrown. Hair regrowth is usually achieved through the use of a hair loss treatment. You are able to choose between natural products for hair loss such as Procerin or to a degree Provillus, or to drugs such as minoxidal or Rogaine which contains finasteride, to mention just a few.

My personal choice is to use the natural products for hair thinning, as these products have no known side effects. Known side effects for other drug treatments for hair loss include loss of libido and possible erectile dysfunction.

Thinning hair is no joke and as soon as you notice that your hair is thinning, it is advisable to seek medical advice and to embark on a treatment to stop and reverse the hair loss process.
