Recent research has shown that female pattern baldness is also largely attributed to DHT, which was previously known to be the main cause of hair loss in women. DHT is a biologically active metabolite of the male hormone testosterone. Previously this was not really linked to female hair loss as it was generally thought that in order for the male hormone testosterone to play a part in females, there would be an increase in the male hormone levels which would be accompanied by an increase in facial hair and a subsequent lowering of the voice.

The new research has proved that this is not necessary the case, as a temporary dip in the level of female hormones, which can be caused by a multitude of factors including menopause, is sufficient to give the male hormone a more powerful position, allowing the formation of DHT which in turn leads to female pattern hair loss or balding.
